The night was filled with electricity as we readied ourselves for an evening we will always remember. Kokos and eyelashes were flying as we painted makas for the days. From the moment we arrived at the Marriott Hotel the spotlight was on us. As we walked into the Great Ball Room the cameras were on us and it seemed we were posing for them through out the entire night. Even while we were eating... And you know what that looks like.... The folks from The Center and the Glade Project really brought the evening together when they had two younger kids portray Sheri Shane and Raquel G. Gregory in their hey day. Brandy Lee came in during the last part of the evening and sang a couple of songs in her wonderful trade mark style and called us up on the stage individually to ask us a couple of questions each. Then the proverbial cherry on top of the sundae was presented. A ten-minute trailer to the documentary currently being made on the Glade was shown. Mixed in the trailer were clips of interviews with Dina Jacobs, Raquel and Brandy Lee. A hush fell over the room as the film clip started and then I saw my fellow cast members and myself on film for the first time in almost 35 years! It was astounding to see us all on the Glade stage. It turns out that the Bishop Museum has photos and film footage of some of the shows we use to perform. And unlike a current documentary on some of our Titas this one was presented in a most respectful manner. Connie and Susan have proven to treat our story in the most respectful light and it is something we can all be proud of. For all involved, we are leaving a legacy to future generations that in some way will help them along this bumpy road we find ourselves on from time to time. A Night At The Glade was a night of electric flash bulbs, rolling cameras, admires of an era long gone and of a coming together for us, the old timers who are still alive. For some it was the closing of the past. For others it was the beginning of a new era. But no matter how we look at it history will now know that we were there and we made a difference by telling our story and by having our story told. Plenty Mahalo to the Glades Project folks and to the folks from The Center for all their careful and laborious efforts in contributing to an evening we will long remember and talk about.
