18th International Two Spirit Gathering

Quebec Laurentians, which is located 1.5 hours outside of Montreal

Fall in the Laurentians is a beatiful site.  The mountains are coloured by Creators paint brush spectaluar reds, yellows, orange and green.  We will be located at Camp Kinkora and will be staying in heated cabins by a lake with access to hiking trails, canoeing, sweatlodges and a large dining room for our meals and indoor activities.

At the 18th Two Spirit Gathering we encourage everyone to "Prepare Our Spirit".  Fall is a time of getting ready for the long winter, taking care of the loose ends.  In the Summer many of us are busy with conferences, activities, etc.  At this gathering we want you to refill your spirit, learn teachings, strengthen your connection to your higher power and spirit.  As well strengthen who you are as a two spirit person.  Whether this is your first, eigthteenth or somewhere in between you will walk away with something you didn't have before.

The gathering is always a time to make new friends, re-unite with those we see so rarely, laugh, share and take our place in our culture.

The deadline for the Tulsa two spirit gathering applications is april the 30th. Please send in your application soon. You don't want to miss the biggest gathering of the year. We have lots of fun planned. This year there will be the Indigenous games day. There
will be hand games. Don't forget the famous talent show. When the Brush Arbor girls preform you know you have been to a show! Come and learn about the traditional stomp dancing of the southern tribes.Vender booths are free so if you have any wares
you can bring and sell them there. Come and see some of the best beadwork in the country by renowned artist such as Jarrica One Feather and Todd Yellow Cloud. There will be traditional elders there to help you learn about two spirit history and tradition. Meet
your two spirit brothers and sisters from all over the U.S.A. and Canada. There will be a talking circle/workshop for transgendered people. So much is going on. Come and be a part of the two spirit movement. Just go to the link below and get your application to the two spirit event of the year. Joey   http://www.denvertwospirit.com/tulsa/index.php

''Working Girl' used to mean that you worked/hustled in the clubs and on the streets. Today, in part to the many government funded programs,
other options are possible. Many girls now go on to obtain a college degree to enhance job opportunities. The glamour days of making a living
as a showgirl or street hustler looking for a sugar daddy have been replaced with office and business
careers in 'mainstream' Hawaii and the
Mainland. You go girl!

We look to those of you who have chosen to work with others in mentoring /queen mothering roles in Healthcare, HIV/AIDS, Mental Health and
Chemical Dependancy Programs. You bring your own life experiences to lead by example those who have succomed to the temptation of
promiscuity, easy cash, and the feel good 'quick fix' of drugs & alcohol. You are making a difference in the future story of mahu everywhere.
You go girl!

Education is a lifetime investment for yourself and the community where you live and work. You go, working girl!

Aloha kakou,

A year ago I issued a call to pule every October 16 until our beloved Princess Pauahi's legacy is once again secure. As you all know, we continue to await a decision on re-hearing from the Ninth Circuit Court in Doe vs. Kamehameha Schools, a ruling which could come any time in the next year.

Waiting can be hard because it seems like inactivity. But I urge us to wait actively...by praying regularly for Ke Akua to protect our Princess' dying wishes. Princess Pauahi did the same as she awaited her physical death. Her dear friend and mentor Mrs. Juliette Cooke told of visiting Princess Pauahi in the last days of her battle with cancer. Princess Pauahi reiterated to Mrs. Cooke the enormous responsibility she felt to our people to ensure that her resources were used to secure our survival. Mrs. Cooke recalled, "I was so much comforted with what she said! She asked me to pray...and to bid all her friends to pray, for she needed help from on high." (Pauahi: The Kamehameha Legacy, Kanahele, 1986, p. 188).

May we likewise espond to our Princess' call to pule for "help from on high". Let's wait actively! In her characteristically selfless way, her final prayers on earth were for us. (I was touched to the core when I realized that recently). Let us honor her memory this anniversary week by praying for her in return.

Together with you until our Princess' legacy is secure,
Noelani Jai

Faikava
Many ancient traditions continue throughout the Pacific relatively unchanged from there early days.

The Kava plant is one of the strongest symbols of this Polynesian shared identity.  The roots of the plant are ground and mixed with water to form the drink that is known as Kava, ‘Awa, ‘Ava, or Yaqona.  Many Pacific cultures share similar stories and chants that stem from the birth of the plant, to its ceremonial place in society, as well as its social function of bringing organization and harmony to its people.

In Tonga, the kava has become a national symbol unity.
A formal kava ceremony is always invoked during a fakanofo - the cultural bestowment of a title; the marriage of one ha‘a (lineage) to another; or uiaki fono - the settling of disputes between different families.  The kava ritual in its informal practice is known as faikava.  The tradition of faikava has become a strong mainstay in Tongan communities back home and abroad.  When a child is born, a faikava is held to honor the newborn and it’s family.  When a young man decides to take a bride, a faikava is called as a means of cultural courtship between the bride and groom.  When a family member passes away, the men of the family will get together and hold a faikava to raise money and make the necessary delegation of responsibilities for each family member.  This practice keeps Tongans bound to their culture and traditional roles in this modern world.  Many faikava clubs have formed in which groups meet together to drink kava, play music and compose songs, discuss the welfare of their community, raise money for functions and families in need, and most importantly, to socialize.

UTOPIA Hawai‘i continues this traditional practice by holding its own faikava circle for our mahu, fakaleiti, and fa’afafine community.  The circle brings brothers and sisters together for the same reasons as Tongan faikava circles.  Through the drinking of kava, the group creates a shared feeling of interconnectedness through song and music, laughter, conversation, and sharing.  The faikava circle restores the cultural bind that many Pacific Islanders feel towards one another and helps ground many individuals to their roots.

Princess Ka'iulani

By Will Hoover

Advertiser library

Princess Ka'iulani (Victoria Kawekiu Ka'iulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa) would qualify as Hawai'i's fairytale princess — beautiful, beguiling and beloved, she owned the hearts of all who followed her royal progress.

She was the only child of Archibald Scott Cleghorn, a successful Honolulu merchant born in Edinburgh, Scotland, who doted on his illustrious daughter, and Princess Miriam Likelike, sister of King David Kalakaua.

As heir-apparent to Queen Lili'uokalani, who was her aunt, Ka'iulani represented the monarchy's last hope.

Ka'iulani dazzled the kingdom with her talent and abilities. She was a horsewoman and swimmer as well as an artist, musician and linguist. She so charmed author Robert Louis Stevenson that he wrote her a poem.

From her godmother, Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani, Ka'iulani inherited 10 acres of Waikiki splendor known as 'Ainahau, where the princess spent most of her life.

The stately property featured cypress trees, ponds and exotic birds, from which the princess became known as "The Princess of the Peacocks."

As with other aspects of Hawai'i's royal history, the princess' storybook life ended tragically after the fall of the monarchy. After a two-month illness, Ka'iulani died at 'Ainahau on March 6, 1899, at age 23.

Manifesto questions same-sex marriage debate
250 gay supporters oppose ‘special rights’ for couples

Activists on both sides of the gay marriage debate clashed in Massachusetts in 2003, after the state’s highest court legalized same-sex unions. The move forced the hot-button issue into the mainstream and now some gay rights activists are questioning whether marriage ought to be a top priority for the movement.

Do you remember?

Do you remember the
21st night of September?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away

Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember how the stars stole the night away

Ba de ya - say do you remember
Ba de ya - dancing in September
Ba de ya - never was a cloudy day

My thoughts are with you
Holding hands with your heart to see you
Only blue talk and love,
Remember how we knew love was here to stay

Now December found the love that we shared in September.
Only blue talk and love,
Remember the true love we share today

Ba de ya - say do you remember
Ba de ya - dancing in September
Ba de ya - never was a cloudy day

Ba de ya - say do you remember
Ba de ya - dancing in September
Ba de ya - golden dreams were shiny days

Thank you for all the birthday wishes!   Shelley

Hey Everyone!
Lance's campaign is in the last stretch of fundraising and we're
trying to secure our last bit of public matching funds (for contributions of $100 or less per person, the state will match). In any event, we've raised almost $11,000 and we're in the last $4000 stretch. However, in order to make applicable cut-off deadlines, we have to do it within the next week.

I'm writing you because I know you and I know you care about Maui's future.

We are running a strong campaign (more information about it, check out the website at http://www.LanceDCollins.com). I'm working hard to get elected but in order for us to make our budget, we have to get that last bit of small contributions so we can get matching funds.

So I write to ask you for your help. If you can afford it, please
consider sending us a small contribution of $100 or less (and if you're with someone and have the money, $100 or less from each of you). So if you can give only $5.00 it actually ends up being $10.00 because of matching funds!

Additionally, if you relay this request to others that also care about
Maui's future, we'd appreciate.

We're so close. I know with your help we can do it.

Mahalo for your kokua,
Daryl*

Aloha kakou,
A year ago this week the Ninth Circuit released its original ruling in John Doe vs. Kamehameha Schools which led to massive protests among Native Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians alike, across the islands and even on the continent.   It's a week we will never forget.  However, since then, Ke Akua has poured out His favor on Native Hawaiians.  Consider that in just one year:

1.    The 8/2/05 ruling was set aside!
2.    A rare re-hearing was granted, and took place recently (June 20) in San Francisco.
3.    Native Hawaiians and supporters have united across our island home and the continent like no time in history.

Our work is not pau, though.  We must continue to educate ourselves and others about these organized legal attacks on Native Hawaiian resources and rights.  Along those lines, please check out this video featuring Kamehameha alumna and actress Kelly Hu ("X-Men II", "Scorpion King"). Kelly is passionate about protecting the legacy of our beloved Ke Ali'i Pauahi, as you'll see.   Click on this link to view her video, and please circulate to your e-contacts:
